How to write cinematic prompts with Midjourney (with example)

This blogpost explains the concepts behind cinematic prompts for Midjourney. As a starter, you can read my other blogposts about cinematic prompts with Midjourney:

Cinematic prompt tips

  1. Add specific details: Mention colors, shapes, and any other details that can create a more accurate image. This way, you leave less for AI to interpret.
  2. Be brief: Use descriptive language, but keep the prompt short and to the point.
  3. Use descriptive language: Use language that paints a vivid picture in the reader's mind.
  4. Use an image reference: Reference an image that has the look and feel you want to achieve.
  5. Reference an artist's style: If you have a specific artist in mind whose style you want to emulate, reference their work.
  6. Reference a genre: If you want to create an image that fits a specific genre, reference that genre in your prompt.

Additionally, you can use a Prefix or Trigger to add context to Midjourney's holistic prompt interpretations. A scene description includes (explicitly or implicitly) character placement, lighting effects, camera angles, and shot types.

example of a cinematic prompt for Midjourney:

/imagine https://unsplash.com/photos/1vK7FkOZvWQ A woman stands on a cliff overlooking the ocean at sunset. The camera is positioned behind her, looking out towards the horizon. The wind is blowing her hair and dress, and the sun is casting a warm glow over the scene. Use warm colors and soft lighting to create a dreamy, romantic atmosphere.
